In another boost to the DoD's efforts to boost production rates on most major missiles and ammunition, the USAF has ust awarded Lockheed Martin Corporation with a $3.2 billion multi-year contract award for the procurement of AGM-158B JASSM and the AGM-158C LRASM.

As per the terms of the contract, Lockheed Martin will be producing these missiles at its existing Orlando, Florida based production facility and deliver them through 2032. The production contract also includes deliveries of missiles to U.S. allies, including, Poland, Finland and the Netherlands in Europe and JAPAN in the Asia-Pacific region.

The strategy shift towards multi-year procurement of munitions by the DoD has been part of its Large Lot Procurement Pilot Program geared towards boosting production rates of key munitions by the U.S.-based defense industrial base by providing sufficient visibility to the industry to be able to invest and rapidly boost production rates, amid surging global demand, efficiently through large-lot procurement of long-lead raw materials and leveraging scale of operations.

Lockheed Martin also unveiled its latest AGM-158XR variant of the AGM-158 missile program, which is capable of striking targets at extended ranges, at an industry event held last month in September 2024. The XR variant can be used on the very same aerial and naval platforms which currently use the AGM-158B/C variants of the JASSM/LRASM while giving the USAF and the USN enough incentive to transition to the longer range XR variant, given its superior capabilities.
